Title: Introduction to Sewing
Duration: 4 hours
Objective: Learn basic sewing machine operations, tools, and techniques.
Projects: Simple tote bag, pillowcase, or drawstring pouch.

Agenda:

 Registration and Welcome

  • Participants sign in and receive welcome packets.
  • Light refreshments and brief introductions.

Introduction to Sewing Machines and Tools

  • Overview of different types of sewing machines.
  • Explanation of essential sewing tools (needles, thread, scissors, pins, etc.).
  • Demonstration of sewing machine parts and functions.

Basic Sewing Machine Operations

  • How to thread the machine and wind a bobbin.
  • Explanation of basic stitches (straight stitch, zigzag stitch).
  • Practice sewing on scrap fabric to get comfortable with the machine.

Fabric Preparation

  • Discuss different types of fabrics and their uses.
  • How to measure, mark, and cut fabric accurately.

Project Introduction and Preparation

  • Choose a project: simple tote bag, pillowcase, or drawstring pouch.
  • Provide patterns and instructions for each project.
  • Participants cut their fabric pieces and prepare for sewing.

Sewing the Project

  • Step-by-step instructions for assembling the chosen project.
  • Hands-on sewing time with individual assistance from the instructor.
  • Focus on proper seam allowance, sewing straight lines, and finishing edges.

Break

  • Short break with light refreshments.

Completing the Project

  • Continue working on the project with guidance.
  • Troubleshooting common issues (thread tension, skipped stitches, etc.).
  • Adding finishing touches (hemming, topstitching, etc.).

Show and Tell

  • Participants share their completed projects with the group.
  • Discuss any challenges faced and how they were overcome.
