In this workshop, participants will learn the foundational techniques of pattern blocking, an essential skill in creating custom garments that fit perfectly. By the end of this session, you’ll know how to block basic patterns and make adjustments for different body shapes.
Agenda:
Welcome & Introduction (5 mins) - Meet & Greet with Shay and fellow participants - Overview of the day’s objectives and materials needed - Brief introduction to pattern blocking and its importance
Understanding Pattern Anatomy (10 mins) - Key pattern elements: grainlines, seam allowances, darts, and notches - Overview of basic pattern shapes (bodice, skirt, pants) - How to read and interpret commercial patterns
Preparing to Block Patterns (30 mins) - Measuring accurately: how to take proper body measurements - Tools for pattern blocking: rulers, tape measures, French curves, etc. - Selecting the right fabric and understanding fabric drape
Hands-On Pattern Blocking: Bodice (20 mins) - Drafting a basic bodice block from scratch - Transferring measurements onto paper - Adding seam allowances, darts, and notches
Adjusting Patterns for Fit (30 mins) - How to adjust a block for different body shapes (petite, tall, curvy) - Common fit issues and how to correct them (e.g., bust adjustments, waist shaping)
Break (10 mins )- A short break with refreshments
Creating Test Garments: Muslin Fitting (20 mins) - Cutting and sewing a muslin (test garment) - Fitting and making pattern adjustments based on the muslin test - How to transfer adjustments back to your pattern block
Q&A and Final Thoughts (5 mins) - Open discussion on pattern blocking techniques - Personalized advice for participants on future projects - Next steps: where to go from here with your pattern blocking skills ---
